The Problem: 

We have thousands of women, children and families fleeing violence, homelessness and poverty, across Canada in over 46 cities. Around half of those people are newcomers, immigrants and refugees. We have thousands of people who are hungry in our own communities. We have hundreds of Muslim children in the foster care system. We have a mental health crisis in our community. 

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever relieves the hardship of a believer in this world, Allah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever helps ease one in difficulty, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and the Hereafter. Allah helps the servant as long as he helps his brother…" (Sahih Muslim)

- Provide safe shelter to women and their children fleeing violence, homelessness and poverty
- Help place Muslim foster children with Muslim families 
- Provide food & essentials to hundreds of families every month
- Provide mental health counselling to hundreds to help them heal

We are Zakat-eligible and 100% of Zakat collected goes to our Zakat-eligible programming - no overhead or administration fees are taken from Zakat funds collected! All donations will be issued a tax receipt.

Our Mission: To provide essential support and services to those facing violence, homelessness, or poverty, empowering them to become healthy, independent, and thriving members of our society.

Our Impact:

In just five years since our launch, Sakeenah has grown tremendously with the support of the community and funding partners. We have served over 14,000 people in 46 cities across Canada, grown our women's shelters to 7 locations across three provinces (with two more launching this year), and now have 36 employees and a network of volunteers who help us with food delivery, collection of essential items, and outreach to local partners.

Our Work

Sakeenah currently operates three main programs: 

1) Shelter Services for Muslim women and children; We currently operate 7 homes, located in Toronto, Brampton, Milton, London, Ottawa, Montreal, and Winnipeg. All of our shelters operate from a culturally, religiously and racially diverse lens. We are opening 2 more this year in Sakatchewan and Newfoundland & Labrador.

2) The People’s Market: We operate an innovative food program in collaboration with the Mississauga Food Bank; this program provides a dignified grocery store experience to those facing food insecurity. We offer a wide variety of culturally diverse foods and essential items, including halal meat, milk and fresh fruits and vegetables.

3) Foster Care: Our licensed foster care program  helps to connect Muslim children in foster care with Muslim foster families. We also train foster care parents and provide counselling support to children and families.

Our services include over 15 holistic client-centered services such as mental health therapy, legal help, food and essentials, income support, educational supports, and life skills and career training.
